Rose (shown here with Baby Onion – a three day old sykes monkey that was subsequently released back into the wild).
Rose is a unique lady in that she became a handrearer for the KSPCA handrear division by accident! The KSPCA Hand Rear Division is a voluntary division with three volunteers giving round the clock care to any animals handed/dumped in to the KSPCA (or seized) that are still unweaned and Rose is the matriarch – and a kali (strict) one at that! Her ability to recognise the need for social interaction with the little ones & their individual needs is unique & totally self taught.
Six years ago, she was handed two puppies that were about 5 days old and told to baby sit them for two hours! She refused to hand them back until they were fully weaned. Since then she has never looked back and is the main reason that the Handrear division has a 90% success rate with a variety of babies – from puppies & kittens to baby donkeys & more exotic breeds.
Like all those who work for the KSPCA, her love for animals is obvious and her devotion & care unrelenting. Many of the babies the KSPCA receive are in an appalling state and it is through her love and dedication that many of them are pulled back from the brink of death and go on to find loving homes.
