KSPCA's Wycliffe Gwatemba on ' Donkey Work'

Wycliffe Gwatemba

We are currently doing Donkey Field Days where we talk to donkey owners/users about the animal welfare five freedoms.

These are:

  • Freedom from pain, diseases & injury
  • Freedom from hunger & thirst
  • Freedom from fear & distress
  • Freedom to express normal behaviors
  • Freedom from discomfort

We also help them in improving their harnesses by padding neck strap, breast band, breech & saddle. Donkey carts with short shafts are modified to fit harnesses well thus causing less injuries to donkeys.

Our team includes vets who treat donkeys that are sick and advise owners on better management. Donkey users & owners are given information on how to be kind to their donkeys, hoof trimming & how to make a good shelter.

The communities we work with are cooperative & listen to new ideas.

The biggest challenge is getting the right harness & donkey cart that is locally available & affordable to the community.
